My Approach

I use a mixture of cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and humanistic techniques in my therapy. The cognitive-behavioral piece allows me to help you identify thought patterns that might be getting in your way. Psychodynamic is a perspective that helps me focus on the past, your childhood and the roots of emotional struggles. Lastly, the humanistic aspect of my approach emphasizes helping you make the right choices for you, to find meaning in your life and grow your sense of self. My goal is for us to work together to create a productive yet safe environment for growth.

Individual Therapy for Adults

A large portion of my practice consists of people wrestling with existential questions like “Is this the career I’m meant to have for the rest of my life?” or “Is this the partner I’m meant to be with for the rest of my life?” These are important questions and worth talking over with someone who does not have any agenda.

From this foundation, some of the issues I work with are:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship Issues
  • Intimacy and Commitment
  • Problematic Drinking/Substance Use
  • Men’s Issues
  • Work Stress/Politics
  • Life Transitions
  • Divorce
  • Mid-life Crisis
  • Career Discernment
  • Grief/Loss
  • Familial Conflict
  • Parenting Issues

Therapy for Teens and Adolescents

The first and vital part of the work I do with teens is rapport-building. My genuine interest in things teenagers care about (sports, music, etc.) gives me an edge at this. From here, we’ll begin addressing the issue that brought your kiddo to therapy. I also work to move the parent-child relationship toward mutual accountability and respect.

I provide treatment to teens and adolescents dealing with:

  • Peer Conflict/Bullying
  • Social Exclusion
  • Depression
  • Conflict with Parents
  • Suicidal Ideation
  • Substance Use/Experimentation
  • Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Blended Family Issues
  • Body Image
  • Sexuality
  • School-Related Stress

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is a passion of mine as I’m transfixed by the idea that two well-liked people can struggle to get along over time. In the decade I’ve worked with couples, I’ve trained in the most evidence-based modalities including E.F.T., the Gottman Method, and P.A.C.T.. I’m currently working towards certification in Relational Life Therapy.

Specific issues I’ve helped couples work through include:

  • Managing “thirds” (Families of Origin)
  • Communication Difficulties
  • Infidelity
  • Lack of Intimacy
  • Lack of Trust
  • Premarital Counseling
  • Co-Dependency
  • Parenting Issues

Substance Abuse

The way I interface with addiction takes many forms. Sometimes I work with the person who is themself using a substance to an extent that concerns them. In other instances, I work with the loved one who is seeking that balance between standing beside their partner or sometimes, ultimately, setting boundaries.

Some of the themes that arise in this work include:

  • Boundary Setting
  • Assertiveness Training
  • Addiction Discernment
  • Psychoeducation
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Co-Dependency
  • “Rocking the Boat”
  • Gaslighting
